Expert Lawn Installation Contractors in New Haven County, CT

Excellence Masonry and Contracting offers expert new lawn installation throughout New Haven County. Whether you need a complete lawn renovation in Milford or a new sod lawn in Southbury, we deliver high-quality results.

A truly successful lawn installation is 90% preparation. Before laying a single piece of sod or spreading seed, we focus on creating the ideal growing medium. This involves power raking and removing the existing poor-quality lawn, then tilling the soil to alleviate compaction. We then add and grade several inches of screened topsoil or high-quality compost, establishing a smooth surface with proper drainage. This amended, de-compacted soil provides the perfect environment for deep root growth, which is the key to a drought-tolerant, resilient, and lush green lawn.

FAQ's

What is the difference between installing sod and seeding a new lawn?

Sod provides an 'instant lawn' that is ready for light use in about two weeks. Seeding is more economical but requires several weeks to germinate and several months to establish a dense turf. Sod is great for immediate results, while seeding is a good budget-friendly option.

When is the best time to install a new lawn in Connecticut?

The best time for seeding is late summer to early fall (mid-August to late September) when soil is warm and weed competition is low. Sod can be installed successfully anytime during the growing season (spring, summer, or fall) as long as it is watered properly.

How do you prepare the ground for a new lawn?

Proper preparation is the key to success. We start by removing the old lawn and weeds, then grade the area to ensure proper drainage. Finally, we bring in and spread a thick layer of high-quality screened topsoil to create a healthy bed for the new grass roots.

How soon can I walk on my new lawn?

For a new sod lawn, you should stay off it for about 1-2 weeks to allow the roots to knit into the soil. For a seeded lawn, it's critical to stay off the area for at least 4-6 weeks to allow the delicate new grass seedlings to grow without being disturbed.

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a method where a slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water is sprayed over the prepared soil. The mulch helps retain moisture and protect the seed, leading to faster, more uniform germination than traditional broadcast seeding. It's an excellent option for large areas or slopes.
