Create a grand entrance for your Old Lyme home with a custom masonry walkway. At Excellence Masonry, we combine old-world craftsmanship with modern materials to build paths that are as durable as they are beautiful. As the birthplace of American Impressionism, Old Lyme is a town with a deep appreciation for art and natural beauty. Excellence Masonry and Contracting designs and builds outdoor spaces that are worthy of this artistic heritage. We create picturesque landscapes and elegant hardscapes that serve as your own private masterpiece, blending color, texture, and form to create a harmonious outdoor environment.

Our material selection is curated for longevity and beauty:

- High-End Pavers: Interlocking concrete systems that resist cracking and offer limitless pattern options.
- Natural Stone: From the formal look of cut Granite to the rustic charm of irregular Bluestone.
- Porcelain Tiles: A cutting-edge option that stays cooler in summer and is impervious to moss and stains.
- Traditional Brick: Adding historic warmth and character to your Old Lyme home.

Engineered for Connecticut Winters:
The secret to a long-lasting walkway is what you don't see. We excavate deep to remove frost-susceptible soil and install a heavy-duty base of compacted processed aggregate. This ensures your walkway resists heaving, settling, and cracking, no matter how severe the winter gets.

Whether you need to replace a crumbling concrete path or create a new grand entrance, Excellence Masonry delivers precision craftsmanship and superior materials.

Our Process

Of course, every project, service and every situation is different, and so is our approach. Below is a general and simplified outline of our process.  We can also bid and build to your preexisting plan or design.

1.
Discovery/Consultation

We assess the architectural style of your home and the primary foot-traffic patterns of the property. We discuss material options—such as Thermal Bluestone or custom Pavers—and identify preliminary considerations like elevation changes and transition points. You’ll receive a rough estimate and a clear next step for the design.

2.
Design / Planning

This phase focuses on the "invisible" foundation. We engineer the sub-base depth to prevent frost-heave and plan the pitch to ensure water sheds safely away from your home’s foundation. We value-engineer the material layout and establish a technical construction plan and project pricing that ensures a perfectly flush, permanent entrance.

3.
Construction / Service

Our masons execute the installation with total precision. We excavate to remove frost-prone soil and install a multi-layer aggregate base, compacted in 2-inch lifts for maximum density. Stones are set with architectural accuracy. Expect a transparent experience and a team that treats your property with the highest level of respect.

What is the most durable walkway material for CT?

For maximum longevity, we recommend Natural Granite or Outdoor Porcelain. Both are incredibly dense, resistant to salt/chemicals, and virtually impervious to water absorption, preventing freeze-thaw damage. Thermal Bluestone and high-quality Pavers are also excellent, durable choices.

FAQ's

Can you install walkways over existing concrete?

We generally recommend removing old concrete to ensure a stable, frost-proof base. However, if the slab is structurally sound and grade allows, we can overlay it with thin pavers or porcelain for a cost-effective update.

Do you install heated walkways?

Yes. We can install hydronic or electric radiant heating systems under pavers, bluestone, or concrete. This eliminates the need for shoveling and salting, protecting both your back and your masonry.

What is the benefit of porcelain pavers?

Porcelain is rapidly becoming a top choice in Old Lyme because it is non-porous. It resists moss, grease stains, and salt damage, and it doesn't fade in the sun. It offers a very modern, clean look.

How wide should my front walkway be?

We recommend a minimum of 4-5 feet for the main entrance. This allows two people to walk side-by-side comfortably and gives the entrance a grand, welcoming scale. Secondary paths can be narrower (3 feet).

4.
Walk-Thru, Clean-Up & Maintain

We perform a final level check and pitch verification across the entire path. We’ll walk the walkway with you to discuss joint maintenance and winter safety (avoiding corrosive chemicals), confirming the project is completed to our "Gold Standard" and ready to enhance your home's curb appeal.
