Pool Deck Construction for New London County Homes

From modern paver pool decks in East Lyme to classic stone surrounds in Mystic, Excellence Masonry and Contracting provides top-tier pool deck construction services throughout New London County.

Pool decks are commonly made of wood - like a real deck, mainly for raised pools, or they are a concrete "deck", more for flat areas. Usually, when using brick, pavers or stone, a pool surround would be refferred to as a pool patio (please go ahead and check out our pool patio page if that is what you are looking for). A concrete pool deck requires specific techniques to handle the poolside environment. The concrete mix itself is often enhanced with additives for increased durability and resistance to salt or chlorine. During the finishing process, we apply a "broom finish," which creates a textured, non-slip surface that is critical for safety in a wet area. To prevent cracking from thermal expansion and contraction under the hot sun, we place control joints more frequently than on a standard patio. These specialized techniques result in a safer, more durable surface that will stand up to the unique challenges of a pool environment. The same idea applies when building a wood, pvc or composite deck. The framing is irregular, there is usually a need for many more deck posts and footings, and any wood used must be 100% safe from water.

FAQ's

What are the best non-slip materials for a pool deck?

Safety is paramount. We recommend materials with a textured surface, such as travertine pavers, many concrete pavers, or natural stone with a 'thermal' finish. These materials provide excellent grip even when wet, reducing the risk of slips and falls around the pool.

Can you build a deck around an above-ground pool?

Yes, absolutely. We design and build custom wood or composite decks that wrap around above-ground pools. This creates a seamless, built-in look and provides a much larger, safer, and more usable area for relaxing and entering the pool.

Which pool deck materials stay the coolest in the sun?

Generally, lighter-colored materials reflect more sunlight and stay cooler. Travertine pavers are one of the best options for staying cool underfoot. Light-colored concrete pavers are also a good choice. Darker materials, like bluestone, will absorb more heat.

Are there specific code requirements for pool decks?

Yes, safety is strictly regulated. All pool areas in Connecticut require a code-compliant fence with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent accidental entry. The specific requirements for fence height and gate hardware can vary slightly by town.

Is wood or composite better for a pool deck?

For decks around above-ground pools, composite decking is often preferred due to its resistance to rot, moisture, and splintering, and its low-maintenance nature. Traditional wood is a beautiful option but requires regular sealing to protect it from constant water exposure.
